A workshop was held to determine why borehole gravity surveys are not routinely used, and to determine whether economic or operational problems with the tools could be overcome by funding from GRI. Representatives of government, service industry, research, academics, oil companies, consulting firms, and manufacturing companies attended. As a result of the workshop, two major areas were identified where GRI can play a significant role. (1) The development of an inexpensive reliable borehole gravity meter. The meter should be capable of providing data in routine oil and gas wells. This means temperatures less than 300 deg F and casing size as small as 5 inches. This would also permit development of a dual sensor gradiometer. (2) Education of industry personnel. Features and benefits of borehole gravity surveys should be understood by oil companies and engineers. Training is considered to require a low level of funding with a high chance of success. The need for a cheaper borehole gravimeter will require a high level of funding and is relatively high risk. A moving gradiometer is considered out of reach.
