The temperature soundings made by the Atlantis at an anchor station north of Bermuda from 16 to 29 June 1938 are analyzed in order to determine whether any diurnal or semidiurnal lunar internal tidal oscillations were present in the observational material. It is concluded that the oscillations which are computed by harmonic analysis are not larger than can be expected in random data. This result suggests that some of the reported occurrences of similar internal waves of tidal character in short series of observations are not real, but merely due to the formal harmonic analysis of the data. However, since in many instances the existence of internal tidal waves has been established beyond doubt, the problem arises to explain which conditions are favorable and unfavorable to the development of such phenomena in the ocean. Various reasons are suggested which may explain the absence of internal tidal waves in the present observation material. (Author)
