Development was made of a high-speed and high-resolution amorphous silicon contact image sensor with A4 size width, 16 elements/mm and 0.8-ms/line reading speed. It was believed to be difficult to apply amorphous silicon to a high-speed image sensor because of its low carrier mobility. However, the writers analyzed the fact of speed limitation and deduced the result that the carrier transit length and the noise in a reading circuit relate to the reading speed limitation. On the basis of this result, adopting a sandwich-type protocell, and developing a low-noise LSI for a reading circuit, they have realized the high performance as mentioned above. This sensor is expected to have wide application, such as to facsimiles, optical character readers, and copiers.
