The Report analyses drug prescription within the Umbria region in 2010. The pharmaceutical expenditure covered by the National Health Service (NHS) was stable in comparison with 2009 (a 0.4% decrease was observed in Italy). The level of use, in terms of defined daily doses (DDDs) per 1000 inhabitants die, was slightly higher in Umbria than in the average Italian population (1000 vs 953). Around 65% of the DDDs are prescribed to the population older than 65. NHS (mainly, GPs prescriptions and in-hospital use) covered 77% of total drug expenditure. Cardiovascular drugs represented the most widely used therapeutic category, covering 51% of the prescribed doses. The prescription of generic drugs reached 54% of the DDDs in 2010. The analysis of prescribing variability among GPs, and the pattern of use for therapeutic categories, make possible to include the Report within audit activities aimed at promoting appropriate drug use.
