A research analysis was conducted to assess the adequacy of information available for the development of a criteria document and industrial standards for platinum salts. The analysis consisted of a brief literature search, a review of pertinent information in the literature, and an analysis of the findings. Platinosis was identified as a disease resulting from excessive exposure to soluble platinum salts characterized by respiratory disorders and allergic skin disease. No data on metabolites or trace concentrations was found for the compounds. Strict hygienic practices were in use for effective protection. Periodic patch tests were recommended to screen workers with allergic tendencies. Emission spectroscopy and atomic absorption techniques were effective for determination of elemental platinum. Research gaps were found in the following areas: relative activity of each form of platinum in causing disease; analytical procedures for determining the form of platinum in air samples; threshold for sensitization to airborne concentrations; and epidemiological studies in industry. The author concludes that there is not sufficient information to set a standard or develop a criteria document for platinum or platinum salts.
