The paper concentrates on the data modeling aspects of a knowledge base management system. After identifying the problems with existing systems, it investigates the objectives of a knowledge base description language, and then briefly considers some work which has been carried out in fields related to the objectives. A language called KBZ is then introduced. The main features which KBZ is designed to support are: full conceptual model semantics, dynamic and static rules, object-oriented concepts, and a unified approach to the description of both data model and functional model aspects of an application. The emphasis in the paper is on the data modeling capabilities of KBZ, but its ability to support other features is also discussed.
