The results of the first year of our clinical evaluation of the performance and efficacy of the Huch transcutaneous oxygen monitor are reported. The monitor has been used on 92 sick infants ranging in age from two hours to one month, most of whom were premature and suffered from or were convalescing from respiratory distress. Simultaneous records were obtained of the oxygen tension, heart rate, respiratory waveform, respiratory rate, blood pressure and transcutaneous sensor heater current. These continuous tracings covered periods of several hours at a time. The results indicate that in this group of patients the values of the oxygen tension obtained from the transcutaneous monitor correlate well with values of simultaneously obtained arterial blood samples. An important observation appears to be the extreme lability of arterial oxygen tension in the more severely ill infants, particularly as a result of routine nursing maneuvers.
