This program was an in-house effort to modify a 77 deg Kelvin, 2-watt rotary-reciprocating refrigerator manufactured by Arthur D. Little, Inc. There were two major objectives of the in-house program; these were: (1) Redesign the expansion cylinder to increase the mass flow rate through the cylinder at design point conditions and to increase gas bearing stability of the expander; and (2) Operate the refrigerator continuously for 5000 hours at design point conditions. Major changes were made in the geometric shape of both the inlet and exhaust ports and the opening and closing points of these ports. One of the inlet ports was eliminated to stabilize the gas bearings of the expander. Tests indicated that the redesigned ports substantially increased the mass flow rate and stabilized the gas bearings.
