This bulletin points out some of the dangers and problems of the drug digitalis. Differing digitalis units according to different standards and the introduction of purified digitalis glycosides contributed to the problem of proper dosage. Pharmacological characteristics and their effects on the patient with congestive heart failure are discussed. Toxic effects include gastro-intestinal disturbances, such as anorexia, nausea, and vomiting, cerebral effects such as fatigue, weakness, restlessness, disorientation and vision problems. The electrocardiogram is valuable in revealing the effect of digitalis and of early toxic development. The bulletin cautions against using digitalis for changes in cardiac rate or rhythm, or for changes in blood pressure. If in doubt about previous medication, the drug should not be used until the necessary information is determined. Because of individual variation, a routine dosage can not be devised. Patients should be taught to recognize common warnings of overdosage. Thirty-six articles are included in the bibliography.
