There is a surprising amount of solid biomedical research in progress within the institutions visited, much of which appears to be well supported by university and/or government funding. The particular areas of research which appear to be most rewarding are studies of the peptidoglycans of Gram-negative bacteria cultivated under the influence of penicillin, the hepato-toxic effect of Frog Virus 3 and its in vitro correlate which is the inhibition of macromolecular synthesis. Other activities include parasite immunofluorescence, classification of Culicoides mosquitoes, the rearing and breeding of mites causing dust allergy isolation and identification of Neisseria and Listeria, T cell depression in atopic dermatitis and finally the ultrastructure of human spermatozoa with emphasis on the enzyme acrosin.
