The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) administers the Poison Prevention Packaging Act of 1970 (PPPA), 15 U.S.C. Sections 1471-1476. The PPPA requires child-resistant packaging of hazardous household products. Over the years that the regulations have been in effect, there have been remarkable declines in reported deaths from ingestions by children of toxic household substances including medications. This textbook was designed to educate pharmacists and physicians about CPSCs child-resistant packaging program. It is intended to be incorporated into the ongoing curricula of medical and pharmacy schools with the hope that physicians and pharmacists will become more aware of their responsibilities under the law. By learning the advantages of child-resistant packaging and by making a concerted effort to promote its use, healthcare professionals will help to further decrease ingestions by young children.
