Many engineering projects such as maintenance dredging, deepwater terminal, ocean outfall involve temporary or permanent changes in suspended loads and deposition which cause loss of habitat, community disruption, increase in oxygen demand, reduction of the euphotic zone and changes in primary productivity. Because of concern expressed by the State of Delaware over the possibility of these effects occurring in the lower Delaware Bay, a study funded by Delaware River Basin Authority was initiated to evaluate the gross environmental effects of hydraulic dredging in the Lewes ferry access channel and overboard spoil disposal behind the inner breakwater. The objectives of the project were to examine the short-term dispersion of the spoil and its gross effects on benthic macroinvertebrates.
