The supermarket HVAC market was characterized, and a desiccant-based system was developed to meet the requirements of the characterization. Two systems were field tested and the potential of further operating savings was quantified. These are extension of the time interval between defrosting the refrigerated food cases and controlling the supply air volume proportional to the load requirements. Energy cost savings by the use of gas instead of electricity for the latent heat portion of the load, more efficient operation of the refrigerated food cases due to less frost and reduced supply air volume are quantified. This development work and testing has initiated market acceptance of use of gas-fired desiccant-based air conditioning systems. Thirty supermarket chains are now using these systems.
