Research into alternative energy sources has grown as conventional fuel sources dwindle in supply, and demand for energy increases. In 2006, non-renewable energy resources accounted for 97% of all transportation needs in the United States. The growing demand for energy in Asia as economies and populations grow highlights the urgent need for a more reliable and flexible energy supply. In addition, pollution concerns over the release of sulfurand nitrogen-based chemicals, as well as greenhouse gas emissions associated with fossil fuel combustion have led researchers towards investigating more environmentally friendly energy sources. One promising alternative being studied is the pyrolysis and gasification of woody biomass.
