Ethiopia has experienced an enviable degree of political stability during the reign of the present Emperor, Haile Selassie I. It is in the United States national interest that Ethiopia continue as a stable and independent nation. This thesis evaluates the elements of power in Ethiopia and the influence of external forces to identify the areas that may threaten the stability of the country especially on the succession of Haile Selassie I. Conclusions are drawn as to United States policy that should be followed to help assure the continued stability of Ethiopia. An evaluation reveals that the internal threats to political stability are from the social and political cleavages between the traditionist and reformist power groups, and from dissident Moslim elements in Eritrea who desire the separation of Eritrea from Ethiopia. The external threats are from Somali Republic and possible Soviet political penetration especially during internal strife.
