A summary of behavioural scientific aspects on the topic 'computer-assisted instruction' is given, with special relevance for training in the Swedish defence. Different kinds of computer-assisted instruction systems are presented. The question of which training tasks are most suitable for computer-assisted instruction is discussed. The following tentative conclusion is reached from the point of view of the Swedish Defence: computer-assisted instruction is most suitable for training tasks requiring psychomotor and/or simple cognitive processes on part of the student. Furthermore, teaching programs of the character 'expert systems without student models', so called branched programs, seem to be the most beneficial ones. Practical advice for teachers and students is given.
