A two-part study program was conducted to more completely define the subsystem requirements of the Advanced Aircraft SOlid STate Electric Logic (SOSTEL II) system. Part one was a study of the SOSTEL II Data Handling System (DHS) to establish specifications for the system. This work included a subcontracted study of the system design requirements for implementation of the system into electronic hardware. This hardware was analyzed to determine the anticipated reliability, maintainability and cost for the system. From these studies and analyses, proposed system specifications were prepared. Part two was a study program to establish a recommended approach for the SOSTEL II Power Distribution and Conditioning System (PDCS). It investigated the problems involved in providing power to the aircraft utilization equipment with the quality which will allow more efficient design of the equipment. The investigation included: a study of improvements available in generating equipment; a study of the effects of using different primary power voltages and frequencies (i.e., 115V AC, 400 Hz,1200 Hz, 800-1600 Hz and 120 VDC); and a study of improvements which can be made in the distribution of electrical power, including the addition of solid state centralized power conditioners to improve the quality of the power being distributed to the loads.
