In the Quaternary volcanic field of the E-Eifel two potential Hot-Dry-Rock magma systems have been studied by field, petrographic and petrologic methods. The Rieden magma system appr. 0.5-0.35 Ma old had six repetitive eruptions of differentiated phonolithic magma, each about 0.5 km/sup 3/ in volume. The magma chamber with a minimum volume of some 5 km/sup 3/ is located at appr. 3 km depth with its top. Model calculations indicate that it very likely is completely solidified and the surface heat flow density maximum has passed its peak. The 0.01 Ma old Laacher magma system only erupted once so far with a volume of 5.2 km/sup 3/ of differentiated phonolithic magma with a temperature of 800-900/sup 0/C. In the most likely model the top of the magma chamber which has a volume of some 16 km/sup 3/ is located at 3 km depth. Calculations indicate the magma body to be solidified and cooled down to temperatures of about or less than 600/sup 0/C (postmagmatic stage). The geothermal energy resources are calculated to be 3.1 x 10/sup 12/ J/km/sup 2/. With 107 refs., 2 tabs., 31 figs. (ERA citation 12:045272)
