Osaka National Research Institute (ONRI) is one of 15 research institutes which are supervised by Agency of Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), ONRI is the fourth oldest and was established in 1918. Since then we have devoted to the research and development of new materials. Typical examples of our past achievement are carbon fibers synthesized from polyacrylonitrile by Dr. Akio SHINDO and electrically conductive transparent thin films composed of indium oxide by Dr. Yoriyuki KATSUBE. These creative achievements have really given birth to new products and industries, such as light but strong structure materials for use of airplanes, golf clubs, and liquid crystal displays. We expect that gold catalysts discovered by Dr. Masatake HARUTA will find expanding applications in the field of clean energy and environmental technology as well as new frontiers in surface science and heterogeneous catalysis.
