The goal of the forum was to promote the effective, safe, and cost-effective use of high quality dental radiographs. In attendance were approximately 300 individuals from private practice, dental and dental auxiliary education programs, dental and dental auxiliary organizations, Federal, State and local government agencies, dental equipment and supply industry, and the legal profession. The Forum consisted of plenary sessions and two sets of concurrent workshops during which conference participants discussed topics such as x-ray patient selection or high-yield criteria in caries and periodontal diagnosis, administrative radiographs, technological and quality assurance aspects of dental radiology, and implementation strategies for education and research. Invited papers addressed topics such as trends and problems in dental radiology, bioethical perspectives on radiation protection, radiation risk assessment, and technological and economic issues in dental radiology. Workshop and plenary session discussions resulted in recommendations that were endorsed by the Conference participants. The recommendations pertained to the three general areas in dental radiology education, research, and the optimization of dental care.
