Poultry certified wholesome during October 2011 (ready-to-cook weight) totaled 3.67 billion pounds, down 2 percent from the amount certified in October 2010. Turkeys slaughtered during October 2011 averaged 28.3 pounds per bird, down slightly from October 2010. Ante-mortem condemnations during October 2011 totaled 9.48 million pounds. Condemnations were 0.20 percent of the live weight inspected, as compared with 0.21 percent a year earlier. Post-mortem condemnations, at 32.1 million pounds, were 0.87 percent of quantities inspected, as compared with 0.92 percent a year earlier.
