Stress fields are determined in the neighborhood of tips of a finite crack which is perpendicular and close to an interface between two bonded, dissimilar elastic materials. The present analysis complements earlier work by M-Isida who obtained limited results for this problem. Both analytical results for the behavior of the stress intensity factors are determined and accurate values of the factors are computed when the crack is close to the interface. These results indicate that growth toward the interface of a crack occurring in the 'harder' material can be prevented for certain combinations of materials. In contrast, other combinations enhance the growth toward the interface of a crack in the 'softer' material. (Author)
