The influence of electromagnetic stirring on the formation of macrosegregation in the secondary cooling zone of the continuous casting procedure is considered. One rotating magnetic field stirrer and two different types of linear magnetic field stirrers were installed on one strand of a four strand billet caster. Billet samples (sulfur prints/chemical analyses) and samples of the cross section of the rolled wire (optical examination of the segregation zone in the etched cross section) were checked. An equiaxed crystallization is obtained. The share of the equiaxed crystallized billet rises with an increase of the applied stirring power: the earlier it becomes effective, the longer it lasts. Even with advanced equiaxed crystallization structure the formation of central segregations cannot be excluded. Material without segregation in connection with equiaxed crystallization structure was encountered only at extremely low casting temperatures.
