In the present work, the propagation of plane harmonic waves in an anisotropic, micropolar elastic media is studied. The special cases of plane harmonic waves in unbounded orthotropic micropolar and tetragonal micropolar elastic media are studied in detail. Propagation of plane waves in an arbitrary direction is considered and, in particular, the waves propagating along the symmetry axes of the media are closely analysed. The velocity dispersion relations and the mode shapes are obtained and discussed. Reflection of plane waves from a stress free plane surface is studied. This problem is considered in two dimensions only, in order to avoid tedious calculations. An approximate method based on a three dimensional lattice model is used to determine the micropolar elastic moduli. Certain restrictions are imposed on the orthotropic micropolar elastic media considering the non-negativeness of the internal energy. The results are applied to a carbon-phenolic resin composite.
