The report describes the herbicide application to National Forest land areas in Utah administered by the U. S. Forest Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture. It covers the practice of applying the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) to approximately 5,000 acres each year of land covered by dense stands of sagebrush and wyethia. The proposal will have a limited impact on the environment by reducing the density of susceptible plant species. Research shows that a minor amount of chemical may find its way to water supplies and to the soil. This contamination is short lived. The risk of serious adverse effects is negligible due to careful planning, application, and supervision. The chemicals used are registered for such use by the Environmental Protection Agency and the U. S. Department of Agriculture.
