Under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), the Department of Health and Human Services was charged with 'Maintaining An Inventory Of Literature, Research and Studies on Health Effects Of Toxic Substances'. The obligation was, in turn, assigned to the National Library of Medicine (NLM). Pursuant to meeting the obligation, the NLM initiated a program to enhance the Toxicology Data Bank (TDB) by the addition of new types of data and information required to evaluate and control health and environmental hazards. The NLM organized a Workshop where 35 professionals from Government and the private sector evaluated 172 potential sources for these required data and information. The evaluation of the 172 sources, plus background discussions and recommendations of the Workshop are presented in the report.
