In the study of voluntary turnover, researchers have typically focused on identifying the major influences on the decision to stay or leave. A main assumption in the studies is that the major determinant of turnover is job dissatisfaction. The present study tests how different individual and work environmental factors separately or together are related to army officers' intention to leave the army. Furthermore, the study tests how individual and work environmental factors are related to officers' mental and somatic health. 632 army officers participated in the study. The findings of the study show that job dissatisfaction had the highest relation to intention to leave. The factors that contributed positively to job satisfaction were organizational committment, job attachment, psycho-social climate and co-worker support. Factors contributing negatively to job satisfaction were work load and role conflict. The results also suggests that different work environmental factors and negative feedback from work are related to mental and somatic symptoms.
