The 86th Tactical Fighter Wing is stationed in West Germany and is available as an active North Atlantic Treaty Organization asset for defense of the free world. This paper examines the first twenty years of its existence as a combat wing (1948 to 1968), and discusses the four time periods of that twenty years as represented by each of the first four weapon systems the 86th used: the F-47, F-84, F-86, and F-102. The four chapters covering these time periods further examine the operational efforts, maintenance and supply concerns, and community relations achievements by the 86th during the respective time periods. The paper concludes by observing that the 86th TFW is like many other Air Force units charged with defending freedom--not combat-tested, but ready to act if called upon.
