The report explores the use of geographic information systems (GIS) for planning and analysis of public transportation systems by transit agencies and metropolitan planning organizations. Most of the agencies contacted were in large metropolitan areas, although several smaller entities were also contacted. The five major application areas for GIS were found to be transit analysis, map products design and publishing, facilities/land management, telephone based customer information services, and transit scheduling/run-cutting. The study found that implementation of GIS is driven by budget considerations and the need to integrate data from several sources to provide comprehensive analyses. In addition, it became clear that, once data had been obtained, there was a significant 'clean-up' activity that has to take place before the data was fully usable.
