As part of the research on burning coal in gas turbines, a Rover 1S60 gas turbine was modified to facilitate running at reduced nozzle velocities and a series of tests was carried out, in which silica dust of known particle size ranges was fed into the combustion gas stream with a view toward correlating the erosion rate of the turbine components with the size and velocity of the eroding particles. Erosion rate was found to increase with particle size but at a diminishing rate as particle size increased. Extrapolation to smaller particle sizes indicated that no erosion would occur at mean particle sizes below 5 to 7 microns over the velocity range used. Increase in velocity was also found to increase the erosion rate but no consistent law could be found to relate the erosion rate to either gas or particle velocity. (Author)
