In the western area of Mt. Aso, a survey was conducted of drilling effects of exploration wells on the environment for geothermal development. Following fiscal 1991, the survey was carried out in terms of ingredient and variations of the five spas in the area. The results of the survey are: No. 1 spa is large in variations of amount of discharge water, anion, and electric conductivity, but there are no correlations among items of survey; No. 2 spa is large in variations of amount of discharge, but stable in the other items; No. 3 showed large variations in every item, and indicated positive correlation between temperature of the spa and amount of discharge and negative correlation between PH and EC; No. 4 spa showed small variations in every item and stable in amount of discharge; and No. 5 spa is stable in temperature of the spa and pH, but after much rainfall the discharge rapidly increased, and ions and EC decreased. It is thought that these are caused by large influence of difference in the climate situation such as precipitation of every fiscal year. No variations are seen which are thought to be brought about by drilling of the exploration well. 3 refs., 6 figs., 10 tabs.
