A pilot project to assess the potential usefulness of the computer assisted instruction system PLATO to the instructional program at the University of Amsterdam is described. A 1500-word English language summary of the project is included in this final report which is written in Dutch. Approximately 400 students and faculty members participated in the project between October 20, 1977 and July 1, 1979. The project itself focused on two main areas--a qualitative evaluation of the use of PLATO in various departments throughout the University, e.g., in French, physics, and musicology courses, and an investigation of the quality and availability of PLATO system courseware. It is concluded that, while PLATO is an excellent system for computer assisted instruction and such a system can be both highly effective and efficient for unit-oriented learning tasks, the applicability of courseware that is developed elsewhere would be limited in Dutch universities.
