The reliability program goal is performance, whether the company is trying to achieve customer satisfaction or to meet a contract requirement for Reliability Improvement through Warranty (RIW) or a contract funding tied to reliability incentive. This paper covers the reliability performance associated with parts control. The objective of this paper includes the parts control effort performed on an Engineering Development program of a Millimeter Wave Seeker at Sperry Clearwater. Elements to be discussed include: (1) the parts control program established to meet Task 207 of MIL-STD-785B, (2) the parts control board responsibilities, (3) nonstandard components characteristics to be controlled, (4) parts testing requirements by device type, (5) testing philosophy, and (6) examples of failure analysis performed as part of the parts screening process. This paper will describe the overall controls, parts approval cycle, testing requirements, and follow-up analysis performed on the program. Two techniques were used to evaluate techniques and to control parts after qualification testing: (1) mask control of the qualified product, and (2) analysis of test failures to provide failure mechanism histiry for comparison. This program was established to meet DAR 7-105.7 (Warranty of Supplies), i.e., providing documented proof on the adequacy of materials and tests.
