The example of a computer-aided inspection tool control system comprising the central computer, the bus-oriented data transmission system, and the test station including the communication unit, illustrates to what extent EDP effectively contributes towards ensuring the inspection tool quality and furthermore also lowers the cost of inspection tool control. The on-the-spot on line acquisition of all data and the central processing of the data while dispensing with the card files result in: an updated index of the inspection tools, less frequent exceeding of interval limits, knowledge of the actual duration of application, as well as knowledge of the state of wear. The actual inspection tool data and the possibilities of a regular preparation of reminder lists are the main reasons for the application of the ITC system. It should furthermore be stated that in the transmission system the data interchange between two arbitrary terminals is supported. Because the software part of the system is to be handled by the user himself, it is expected that the necessary standard operations and codes, as well as the character set at the application interface, are defined in the appropriate standards.
