The performance of the thermally addressed dye switching liquid crystal display for applications as a CRT replacement in computers and data terminals is analysed. The major conclusions are: 1) All the CRT display functions commonly appeared in data terminals can be simulated by the thermally addressed dye switching display. 2) The row heating energy requirement for writing the display is the most important factor that limits the performance in this application. Any means of reducing this heating energy demand will improve the display performance. 3) It is essential to have good thermal design such that the input heating energy for row addressing can be properly dissipated. 4) An intelligent temperature compensation circuit is essential to perform the thermal management function.
