There is an increasing trend towards the use of prepackaged systems in the process industries. Plants are being mounted on barges and are shipped where needed. The offshore industry has used control modules for years as the only viable way of building production platforms. Analyzer systems now are mostly prepackaged. Certain advantages have been found for prefabricating control modules that make them attractive for more conventional plants. First the field labor is reduced; the systems are shop fabricated under controlled conditions using systems specialists. This results in better quality and often the overall costs are lower. The buildings also have tax advantages since they can be written off faster. The work can be started sooner and finished later. This offers considerable schedule advantage. Fabrication is not dependent on other phases of construction such as pipe racks being completed or a control building being finished. Once the buildings are on site, the labor and time to install the field wiring is reduced. One building with about five thousand terminations was wired in less than a week. The largest advantage is that system acceptance testing can be done more thoroughly considerably reducing field problems.
