Raw material supply for the specialty glass industry is characterized by a wide diversity of commodities, stringent chemical and physical specifications, and small tonnage purchases relative to other glass industries. In the early 1970's, Corningk Glass Works recognized that these constraints created significant risks to the continuity of supply for many of our raw materials. To minimize these risks, special raw material development programs were undertaken. The large number of materials that we use made identification of potential problems difficult. Therefore, we developed an analytical matrix that was able to rank each of our raw materials in a hierarchy of risk in two dimensions: internal sensitivity to the loss of that material and external probability of its loss. This matrix was applied to our raw materials, and the resulting ranking of risk enabled us to concentrate our limited technical resources on raw materials which were most likely to adversely affect manufacturing.
