The advantages of vacuum interrupters are demonstrated, aspects of vacuum interrupters production explained and in service reliability and controllability are examined. Materials and design of the most important vacuum interrupter components are presented and critically compared. Furthermore, results are presented concerning the arc motion behaviour on spiral-shaped, slotted and cup-shaped electrodes and brought into relation with electrode erosion and contact resistance. Proposals are submitted how to prove the technically applicable dielectric strength of vacuum interrupters by improved testing procedures. Special demands are made on theoretical and practical switchgear development in order to meet the necessary rapid progress.
