Catastrophe theory is a mathematical modeling technique for representing behavioral processes. It is especially useful for explaining how individuals may change abruptly from one state to another under dynamic circumstances. Based on a comprehensive data base, a computerized catastrophe model of behavioral accidents in mining has been developed. Behavioral accidents are those where individual perceptions, attitudes, behaviors or reactions to stimuli are a primary cause of the accident. This model links individual psychological, group behavioral and environmental variables with other accident causing factors. It answers several long-standing questions about why some normally safe behaving persons occasionally engage in unsafe acts having high risks of serious injury. The model suggests several types of actions which might be taken to reduce accident rates.
