At millimeter-wave frequencies, the two most useful active devices are IMPATT and Gunn diodes. Both are two-terminal devices and can be used for oscillators or reflection-type amplifiers. IMPATT diodes provide higher power and higher AM noise; their major applications are for transmitters. Gunn diodes provide medium and low power output and are normally used for local oscillator applications because of its low AM noise. The past decade has seen increased applications for millimeter waves both in commercial and defense activities. Conventional millimeter-wave solid-state sources were built in waveguide, suspended stripline, and finline. Fabricating these components in microstrip provides advantages of light weight, small size, and low cost. This paper summarizes the recent developments in millimeter-wave microstrip solid-state sources and amplifiers.
