Automated testing and diagnosis of analog circuit boards can be based on structural and functional descriptions of electronic circuits as well as on heuristic knowledge about testing procedures. A prototype of a knowledge-based diagnostic system has been realized that automatically tests the attached print board, locates faults, and communicates with the diagnostician who performs various adjustments and repairs. The initial model of the circuit is based on the structural and functional description at a high level of abstraction. The model is then refined on demand by successively incorporating the empirical and the detailed knowledge about the board. The knowledge is represented in frames that are linked by the cause-effect relation to build a diagnostic graph. The prototype is implemented in Prolog and runs on various computers under the Modula-Prolog system.
