A computer image analysis system has been constructed for use in the development and evaluation of pattern recognition techniques for automated prescreening of cervical smears. Hardware for the system comprises a small computer, an image dissector scanner, a visual display unit, and a computer controlled microscope. This computer program, written in modular form to provide maximum flexibility, enables each field to be scanned and analysed to measure and classify each dark object according to classification algorithms currently under investigation. A wide range of numerical output and display facilities are included, and the system has already been successfully used to provide both detailed parameter measurements and classification on individual objects, and measurements and comparisons of various pattern recognition techniques developed for cervical smear analysis.
