A method is proposed which enables one to extend the range of measurable velocities by determining the motion of an object not from the intensity of the line but from its position on a velocity scale. The measurement transducer contains a radiation source, a resonance absorber vibrating with constant acceleration and a radiation detector, information from which is fed to a multichannel analyzer in which the scanning over channels is synchronized with the cycles of motion of the absorber. Velocity can be measured over a very broad range from fractions of a micron to tens of centimeters per second. Instruments based on the proposed method may find use in various fields of engineering: from measurement and regulation of low velocities of pulling of a melt in the growth of single crystals to control of velocity in the docking of space ships.
