An ever increasing role is being played in electricity supply systems by the small heat-power unit. This type of installation produces both heat and electricity on a decentralised basis (order of magnitude=100 kW). Efficient and reliable operation can only be guaranteed by the provision of synchronisation, control and monitoring, which up till now have been carried out by traditional analogue electronic and electromechanical relays. However, the synchronisation and parallel switching algorithms necessary for a synchronous machine to be automatically coupled to the mains by a microprocessor have now been developed. The same microprocessor can be used for monitoring, power regulation, reactive power control, data logging and so on.
