Although infrequent fires in VHV-HV/MV conversion substations could cause the destruction of equipment. Whether they are minor (wiring burnout) or major (total destruction of the installation), the consequence for the customers is generally interruption of the electrical energy supply. Constructive arrangements that have been developed to limit these risks are: partitioning of installations, elimination of liquid insulating material in all equipment except transformers, improved MV equipment performance with regards to cutoff and connection techniques, etc. The operation of substations installed in highly-urban environments has led to additional arrangements to reduce risks for third parties. The transformer cell has been subjected to specific study. New measures include vertical fire-break walls capable of resisting the blast effect, vertical expansion chimney for hot gases, oil retaining tanks and water-sprinkler protection against fires.
