Internal-mirror argon-ion lasers from several suppliers have found acceptance in original-equipment-manufacturer (OEM) applications. A new internal-mirror, air-cooled, low-power argon-ion laser, Cyonics Model 2002, has been developed by the author's company and is now commercially available. This new laser has been explicitly designed for low-power operation, and the tube functions optimally at power levels of 5 to 10 mW. The tube diameter and cooling-fin dimensions have been minimized, consistent with low-power needs. The Model 2002 is the smallest argon-ion laser being made today, and it carried a low price tag, but it meets high performance criteria. The authors discusses potential applications and presents the design and performance of this new laser. Low-power needs in graphics, inspection, and biomedicine are considered.
