Power supplies present many problems not encountered in testing most other types of PCB. One of the problems often encountered is that assembly normally takes place in several phases and not all the components are mounted directly onto the PCB. A general-purpose combinational tester such as the Impact 8510 allows testing to occur at each assembly stage followed by full functional and parametric testing all on the same system. The same ATE system can also be used as a repair station to speed up service and repair. When it is realised that such a system can also handle all the data, process it and produce reports and statistical fault analysis with the added convenience of bar-code reading and labelling, it can be seen that there are many advantages to this combinational ATE approach.
