A standard data format protocol for public-key cryptography is proposed. The protocol applies to the encryption function, which might be thought of as an encryption layer. The encryption function may be inserted anywhere in a multilayered ISO OSI-type network protocol, but would typically be found at some higher layer, such as the application or presentation layer. This protocol defines the data structures of Rivest-Shamir-Adleman (RSA) public and private (secret) keys, signatures, and encrypted messages. It optionally provides the necessary data fields to support a new, faster method of computing the RSA formulas. It also defines methods for bootstrapping into faster single-key encryption algorithms, while retaining the convenience and functionality of public-key cryptography. Methods for producing RSA digital signatures for small message digests are defined which are faster and more compact than applying the RSA signature to entire lengthy messages.
