The relational database is a group of listed data, called logically a 'relation'. For the physical structure (structure of storing data in the computer), there are methods of storing these listed data in the direction of a column (lateral storing) and using index files as an efficient method of retrieval. There are problems of a database with such a physical structure, and the authors describe the effectiveness of a transposed file structure (method of storing lists in the row direction: vertical storing). The authors describe the online update operation of the database with the transposed file structure. The authors further refer to database reconstruction, and particularly to the fact that the vertical storing method can flexibly respond to a change of the relational schema.
