Methods developed to analyse the non-linear geometrical and material behaviour of imperfect flat plated structures subjected to destabilising forces have recently been extended to cover singly curved imperfect shell structures. This paper presents the results of a study of the effects of initial deformations on the strength of compressed cylindrical panels of the geometry associated with those used in orthogonally stiffened leg membergs in offshore steel jacket structures. The results are discussed and compared with those obtained using the appropriate modified critical stress formula incorporated in the new DnV rules. It is tentatively concluded that design formula gives acceptably conservative results for the initial deformations likely to be encountered in such panels in practice. (Wassmann)
